Introduction to hazards and Disasters - Book

About the Book

The main purpose of this book is to provide a very basic and an introductory text on hazards and disasters for university and college students of Disaster Management, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences and many other related disciplines as well as professionals. The book will also be useful for the candidates of various competitive and entry test examinations. The book covers almost all types of hazards and disasters including Geo-physical, Hydro-meteorological, Environmental, Anthropogenic, Technological, Rapid-on-set and Slow-on-set events, which directly and indirectly affect and threaten human lives, properties and ecosystems on community scale. Within this context the book assesses the risk and threats posed by such a variety of hazards and disasters as a whole to outline the overall perspective of actions preventing, reducing and modifying the disaster potential. The book is organized into 17 chapters as a whole. The first chapter is dedicated to an overview of fundamental concepts of DRR. In other chapters each of the disasters covered, is dealt in-depth with its causes, characteristics, types, damages and mitigation measures. Every chapter has covered examples and case studies of each disaster, which reveals practical problems in the field and its appropriate solutions, including tools, methodologies and lessens learnt. Apart from the usual natural disasters like earthquake, tsunami, landslide or flood etc., the book also deals with environmental issues, epidemics, chemical and industrial accidents and even compound and complex disasters. Finally, the book provides a good analysis of the global trend of disasters and risk reduction approaches. The book will prove to be a very good tool of creating awareness regarding DRR education in a crucial time, when the United Nations member states have recently adopted a new Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015- 2030) as a new action program for the next 15 years to move towards the main goal of achieving a resilient world.
